Three directors of the alleged illegal download site NinjaVideo were charged in the United States for breach of copyright for the purpose of personal enrichment. Two other men, one American and one Greek, were also charged and are believed to have coordinated the posting of illegal files on the site.
Established in 2008, NinjaVideo had seen rapid success, reaching millions of visitors in 2010. According to police, the site that displays advertising banners and offered as a subscription service providing access to more files, would have generated more than half a million dollars during its three years of existence.
The site has been closed since June 2010 and entering its domain name by U.S. Customs, a controversial practice that allows U.S. authorities – and themselves – to completely block access to a website.
In a manifesto released on video before it closed, the hosts of the site justified the creation of NinjaVideo by the greed of movie studios.
